University Archives

The Dickens reading ticket stub

Going under the hammer this week at University Archives is a ticket stub for Charles Dickens's second U.S. tour dated January 2, 1868.

Billed to start at 8 o'clock precisely, the reading was scheduled to take place at Steinway Hall, and reserves the bearer a Floor seat in Row A, No. 11.

In 1867-68, Dickens embarked on his second and final American reading tour which included multiple performances at Steinway Hall in New York City featuring his rendition of scenes from A Christmas Carol , Dombey and Son, Nicholas Nickleby, and The Pickwick Papers. Four nights after this performance in New York he read in Boston, and his final reading in the country was back at Steinway Hall on April 20.

The tour was significantly lucrative, earning him about $19,000, but had a significant impact on his health, and he died 18 months later.

Measuring 1.75" x 2.5", it has an estimate of $5,000 - $6,000.

The Rare Autographs, Manuscripts & Books sale ends August 27.
